f mental functionality were the sole determinant of intelligence, Mercury in Aquarius would score very highly. Mercury in Aquarius creates cultural icons. But why? Mercury, the planet that symbolizes logic, reasoning, communication and our senses, in the innovative, eccentric and freedom loving Aquarius. This is a combination that will learn the rules just to break them. Both aspects of this will be pursued with equal vigor.
Mercury in Aquarius Properties

Mercury, as the ruler of Gemini, the mutable air sign is in the fixed air sign of Aquarius. Astrologers love to call this relationship a triplicity. This is the basis of the trine aspect you are familiar with. Fixed signs are the middle of the season and in the Northern Hemisphere, the midwinter sign is Aquarius. It cares about the collective but values the freedom of the individual. Would this seemingly disparate notion appeal to the ruler of Gemini?
But what about the ruler of Aquarius? Aquarius has two rulers. Saturn is the traditional ruler and Uranus is the modern ruler. To the earlier astronomers, Saturn was the final planet and it was the outermost limit of our solar system. Saturn in Aquarius represents the social structure that will bind a group of people to each other. The eleventh house areas of peer groups, social networks, organizations and shared viewpoints are all very Saturnian at their core.
When Uranus was first discovered it was during the American Revolution. New ideas were emerging regarding the rights of man. Independence and freedom. No longer subject to the will of a king.
Uranus is considered to be the higher vibration of Mercury, so there is an immediate affinity between the two planets. The Uranian significations of Aquarius are the uniqueness, the electricity, the sudden changes that can be brought about and the originality.
We can observe the sparkling quality of Mercury in Aquarius. This results in a probing mind. It is also disciplined. That little bit of Saturn’s influence in Aquarius’s fixed modality provides these thinkers with patience. It is also where they derive their tenacity from.
Scientists or Icons?

Here are a few examples of cultural icons who have Mercury in Aquarius. Consider that both Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Georg Friedrich Handel have Mercury in Aquarius. Both were the toast of their respective cities and represented the pinnacle of the early classical music period. They are still played almost daily on radio stations 275 years later.

Not surprisingly there are modern parallels to this as well. Bob Marley had his Mercury in Aquarius as did John Lydon aka Johnny Rotten. Both are the face of their respective genres. Like Mozart and Handel, they didn’t create the genre. They are the most public and best known face and embodiment of that subculture.

Speaking of subcultures, the Beat writers Jack Kerouac and William S. Burroughs were also Mercury in Aquarius. Both are cultural icons who represent the Beat movement of the middle of the 20th century, speakers and seekers who were looking to challenge and change society.

Are you the Next Cultural Icon?
Mercury in Aquarius creates Cultural Icons, not mad scientists. If you have your Mercury in Aquarius, this is going to resonate very strongly with you. You are logical and data driven, but only to an extent until it no longer matters. You are prone to fits of sudden inspiration and brilliance. You constantly keep up with the news and occasionally fight city hall. There is a detachment to all of this. You prefer to be on your own. You need alone time more so than others. These qualities can make for a good scientist. Your unique fashion sense make you seem to be a mad scientist. You are inventive and can be so on an epic level. Bob Marley’s music is still wildly popular. You have a good mind for anything you set it to, for good or ill.
I leave you with words of Mozart, ‘Neither a lofty degree of intelligence nor imagination nor both together go to the making of genius. Love, love, love, that is the soul of genius.’ Is it any wonder that Valentine’s day is in the same sign as Mozart’s Sun, Mercury, Saturn and Venus?
